Instructor Equivalency

Become an IKO Instructor

The global community of Kiteboarding Instructors is composed of many different groups and organizations. Therefore, IKO gives the opportunity to experienced and certified Instructors from other organizations to become IKO certified via an equivalency process. Note that all Instructors certified by equivalency will start out as Level 1 Instructors, and will then follow the procedures outlined below to reach Level 2 status.

Certification for PASA, VDWS, BKSA, FEV , FAV , FFVL & BPJEPS Instructors

Instructors certified by these associations must complete an IEC (Instructor Equivalency Course).

They must provide the following information to the IEC Organizer:
  • A copy of their Instructor diploma
  • A copy of a valid First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Kiteboarding only: a proof of powerboat certification
  • A letter of recommendation and proof of one year of teaching experience
  • Complete an IEC (or an ITC course)
  • Pass the Pre-ITC Courses
After successful completion of the 3-day IEC course, or the 5-day ITC course these Equivalency Candidates will become Level 1 Instructors. They can then reach Level 2 status once they have logged 15 students and 80 teaching hours and successfully pass the online Level 2 Exam. Instructors who have logged the required number of students and hours should email IKO Support for access to the online Exam.

Certification for current Kiteboarding Instructors

Instructors seeking dual certification must complete an IEC (Instructor Equivalency Course) in the new discipline.

To attend an IEC, the Instructor Candidate must:
  • a. Be a valid (membership active) IKO Instructor Level 1.
  • b. Have snow kited for at least 12 months.
  • c. Be a certified IKO snowkiter level 3N minimum.
  • d. Have a valid First Aid and CPR certificate.
After successful completion of an IKO 3-day IEC or 5-day ITC, these equivalency Candidates will become Level 1 Instructors and can reach Level 2 status once they have:
  • a. Logged a minimum of 15 students and 80 teaching hours.
  • b. Email the IKO Support for access to the online Exam only after the minimum teaching hours are logged.
  • c. Successfully pass the online Level 2 Exam.

Certification for Powerkite Instructors

IKO Powerkite Instructors must attend an ITC in order to become an IKO Water or Snow Instructor.

Certification for Powerkite Trainers

IKO Powerkite Trainers can attend an Instructor Equivalency Course (IEC) to cross over to water or snow instruction.

To attend an IEC, the Instructor Candidate must:
  • Be a valid (membership active) IKO Powerkite Trainer
  • Have a valid first aid certificate
  • Prove sufficient riding skills in the designated discipline
After successful completion of the 3-day IEC course, or the 5-day ITC course these Equivalency Candidates will become Level 1 Instructors. They can then reach Level 2 status once they have logged 15 students and 80 teaching hours and successfully pass the online Level 2 Exam. Instructors who have logged the required number of students and hours should email IKO Support for access to the online Exam.
